Faith Rewarded: Finding the Entire 2004 Red Sox roster in Thrift Stores

My journey to find every 2004 Red Sox player t-shirt goes on. If you are not sure what this is referring to please follow the link to read my introductory piece in my ever-going quest to own every Red Sox player T from the 04 season.

Let me start by saying I, unfortunately, did not find any new 04 Red Sox shirts. However, this does not mean I failed to stumble upon some gems when frequenting my local thrift stores. So lets get right down to it and check out what I picked up. For the record, this was two trips over the last 3 weeks but I was quite happy with my finds.

  1. 2004 Red Sox World Series Framed Poster $10

So i did not find any new player t’s but I did pick up this sweet framed piece of 04 memorabilia. Featuring Schilling, Pedro, Varitek, Foulke, Manny, Ortiz, Cabrera and Damon this is a fine addition to any man cave, living room, kitchen or displaying it on the outside of your front door so people know whats up when they come to your house.

2. Jonathan Papelbon Shirt  $3.99

The former starter, then closer, then starter than closer. Pap’s intimidating stare is how I usually look when I am thrifting. I also tend to wear kilts and Irish step dance around the store when I discover a truly amazing find. Pap was a 6x all-star and has over 350 career saves and one of the best to ever own the 9th inning. This shirt is a size small so I will have to lay off the weights (and by weights, I mean crunch wraps) to fit in this T.

3. Yoenis Cespedes $3.99

Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this forgotten treasure. In the summer of 2014, a last-place Red Sox team sold everything but the kitchen sink. A highlight from this trade included John Lackey for Joe Kelly and Allen Craig. People forget Allen Craig hit .315 and finished 18th in All-Star voting in 2013. This also lead to the Sox having an unbelievable Pawsox outfield in 2015 with Craig, JBJ and Rusney Castillo. But anyway the Sox traded Lester and my favorite 2013 Red Sox player Jonny Gomes. Cespedes had a very brief stint with the Red Sox until he was eventually traded for Rick Porcello. 52 did manage to hit 3 triples in his cup of coffee with the team. I do think it is fun/funny to have his shirt and no-one can take that away from me.

4. Ted Williams $1.99

So I don’t think they had players Ts back in 1948 but still, this is always a cool and fun find. I think all stores should be legally obligated to sell this shirt at $4.06. What can I say the greatest hitter to ever play the game.

5/6. Mookie Betts and David Price $3.99 each

I really love finding shirts of old players from my childhood but it is always really cool to find some modern players. I was beyond thrilled when I found a Mookie Betts and David Price shirt on the same day! On the same rack even. These shirts sell for about $30.00 a pop so picking them up for four bucks is great! How can you not love Mookie Betts. The Man is the MVP and easily could have won it back in 2016. He’s a great bowler, has a great smile and is helping a new generation of people fall in love with the game. (Just as a young Shea Hillenbrand did for all of us back in 02). Now I must admit I was not a Price guy. But as he said he holds all the cards now so I cannot say anything. To be fair to the man he earned it. He pitched in the biggest moments on the biggest stage and came through. I’m not saying I love the guy but we do not win the Word Series without him.

5. Troy Tulowitzki $3.99

You truly never know what you will find when thrifting. Even though he recently joined the Yankees I still think it is a unique and fun shirt to own. Yanks picked him up for around half a million so they are buying low on a guy who was once considered an elite player. Tulo will hit .241, 13 HR and 54 RBI.

6. Kemba Walker (UCONN) $3.99

Technically speaking this is not a Kemba shirt. Just another example of the NCAA profiting off young people. Pay the Players! Kemba may be the most underrated player in the league. An absolute dagger of a step back and an overall super fun player to watch. As of today, the Hornets are the 8 seed. All I’m saying is let’s get Kemba in the playoffs and see if he can make some noise.

So as you can see I did not get a new 2004 Red Sox shirt but I still picked up some great finds. Until the next thrift adventure.
